The Granary is set high on the banks of the river Forth overlooking the historic Fords of Frew. As the name suggests, the building was once a grain store, and when active contained its own thrashing mill. The Granary is actually built on the site of the original farmhouse which dates back to the early 18th century. Bonnie Prince Charlie is said to have slept there.

Our superb self-catering conversion has inherited many of the features and character of this very old building. We have retained the sandstone outer walls (almost 3 ft thick in places) with their small traditional windows. An arched open doorway at the gable end has been replaced by two large French Doors which open out onto a patio area.

Inside the building, the single span roof was originally designed to provide a large floor area, (uninterrupted by uprights), which served as a place to spread the grain and allow it to dry thoroughly. This large space has been echoed in the living area of the accommodation.

 
The Granary can accommodate 4-5 guests and is equipped to the highest standard, tastefully decorated throughout, and has been designed to make your holiday as care-free as possible.

Water, electricity and central heating costs are included in the rental. Towels and bed linen are provided at no extra charge. We ask that guests respect our non-smoking policy and well-behaved pets are welcome (there is ample opportunity to walk them on the river bank).

The living area in the Granary is a large spacious room which accommodates the Kitchen, Dining and Lounge Areas.

The room is well illuminated with natural light from four windows and two french doors which open onto the Patio Area at the north-facing gable wall of the building.

The Lounge Area offers comfortable seating, great for relaxing in front of the colour television or settling down to a good book.

The furnishings throughout are of traditional solid pine.

The Dining Area has a large circular table with ample seating for 4 adults. The table can be extended to cater for 6.

As an alternative, on warm summer nights, your evening meal can be enjoyed on the Patio where you can watch the cattle grazing peacefully on the banks of the river.

The Patio Area is also ideal for a spot of afternoon sunbathing. The view overlooks the riverbanks of the Forth and through the trees, the distant mountains of the Scottish Highlands, the hills of The Trossachs and the impressive mountain of Ben Lomond can be seen. The sunsets in summer are often stunning in this part of the world and the Patio is perfect for viewing the spectacle.

The Kitchen Area is well equipped to a very high standard. Kitchen appliances include a four-ring electric hob, an electric oven, a microwave oven, a dish-washer and a fridge/freezer. For laundry needs, an automatic washing machine is provided.

The Mill Room is a double bedroom of generous size and is situated at the far end of the hall. This area of the Granary was where the thrashing mill was installed many years ago.

There is ample storage space in the built-in wardrobe and this is augmented by the two drawer units on either side of the bed and the dressing table.

The room has en-suite facilities of WC, sink and shower.

The super king-size bed can be converted into twin beds as required and the room can also accommodate a fold down bed for a third person.


The colour television is positioned in a wall recess that has been retained from the original Granary. The recess was where the bottom end of the auger sat (a device for lifting grain using a rotating spiral 'screw' inside a metal tube).

Natural light is provided from the window near the door to the room and from a small window in the en-suite bathroom.

The room receives a substantial amount of sunshine from the en-suite window in the morning and from the bedroom window in the afternoon and evening.

The view from the bedroom window looks out to the west and spans from the nearby village of Kippen to Ben Lomond and the Menteith Hills.

The Poppy Room is situated midway in the building and access is from the hall.

This spacious double bedroom has a king-size bed, colour television, is equiped with the same generous storage space of the Mill Room and has identical en-suite facilities.

The window looks out onto the rear of the Granary and receives the sun for most of the early part of the day.

The distant view from the window is of the Ochil Hills situated to the left of the Wallace monument and Stirling Castle (visible on a clear day)
